  8.  AB    OBJECTIVES: To review the annual health costs of treatment and care for
  9.        patients with AIDS or patients with severe HIV disease (defined as HIV
  10.        infected patients with CD4 count below 200 but no AIDS diagnosis). These
  11.        average annual costs were compared with estimates from 1991 and changes
  12.        in pattern of resource use assessed. RESULTS: Data will be presented to
  13.        show trends in health expenditure on treatment and care set against
  14.        trends in prevalent AIDS cases in England. Average annual cost per
  15.        patient for AIDS and HIV severe disease will be presented as a range.
  16.        Costs will be categorised as in-patient care, day patient care,
  17.        out-patient care, drugs and home support. The pattern of resource use
  18.        will be compared with the estimates for treatment and care expenditure
  19.        in 1990/91. The potential impact of prevention activities will be
  20.        discussed. Data will be presented comparing projected life years lost
  21.        before the age of 65 from AIDS with other major causes of death.
  22.        Estimated treatment and care costs will be combined with published
  23.        studies of disease progression to estimate lifetime treatment and care
  24.        costs of an HIV infected patient.
